Art Appreciation

I appreciate the female figure, and I definitely appreciate an artist who can present their beauty on canvas. Dutch painter Herman Tulp is perhaps one of my favorite modern hyper-realistic painters. He is known for his paintings of females in intimate settings and dreamy spaces.

Carl Larsson

Art Appreciation

It's almost Christmas day, and I was surfing the net for artists or photographers who were primarily known for Christmas themes.

I came across Swedish painter Carl Larsson. He grew up in extreme poverty, attended the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts at the age of thirteen, and became a graphic artist for newspapers, magazines and books before moving to Paris at the age of 24. He then met his wife, Karin Bergöö, another artist, at a Scandinavian artists' colony outside Paris who had an influence in his work.

His wife and children became his models, and he is more recognized for his paintings of his family during Christmas.

Jacques-Emile Blanche

Born on January 1, 1861, Jacques-Émile Blanche was a sought after French portraitist. Influenced by contemporaries like John Singer Sargent and  Édouard Manet, the self-taught artist was known for his paintings of society's well-known artists, writers, composers, and aristocrats.

Sergio Lopez

Californian painter and illustrator Sergio Lopez is known for his in plein air and figurative paintings of women with floral patterns.

Based on an interview he did with Denver's Heliko Gallery, he is a traditionalist artist, inspired by artists such as Norman Rockwell and John Singer Sargent, and hates the art buzzword "neo." You can check out the full interview HERE.

Tom Kelley, Sr.

Tom Kelley Sr. was an American photographer best known for taking the iconic photos of Marilyn Monroe naked which was then used by Playboy magazine.

In 1935, Kelley established a photography studio in Hollywood and began taking promotional photos of movie stars such as Clark Gable, Bob Hope, and Marilyn Monroe.

Luis Ricardo Falero

Perhaps you have seen his artwork before in books. Maybe even glanced at a print hanging in a store or office. And like myself, you really didn't know who painted those mystically beautiful and surreal paintings.

Spanish painter Luis Ricardo Falero was known for his paintings of beautiful young women in fantasy and celestial settings.

Alexander Rodchenko

If you are my age, you probably recognize the inspired photo of Russian Avant-garde muse Lilya Brik on the rock band Franz Ferdinand's You Could Have It So Much Better album cover.

The photograph is by Russian photographer Aleksander Mikhailovich Rodchenko. He is know as one of the founders of constructivism, a Russian architectural philosophy during the early 20th century.

Chicago - You're the Inspiration

My dad use to have a small collection of albums ranging from Pink Floyd to Michael Jackson to Chicago. He would play albums during get-togethers and parties.

One of the albums I remember him playing from beginning to end was Chicago's IX album--back then, shuffling wasn't easily available.

I quickly became a fan, and I would steal borrow the album and pretend I was a DJ with my Fisher Price record player.

When I was eight years old, I remember watching Chicago's "You're the Inspiration" video. It featured the band playing in a apartment-setting with snip-its of couples embracing and kissing.

The song was released on November 29, 1984 and hit No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Adult Contemporary chart.

Leon Kroll

Art Appreciation

American painter and lithographer Leon Kroll was once described by LIFE Magazine as "the dean of U.S. nude painters."

The painting that caught my attention was one titled Reflections, which I came across while browsing a blog I follow, La Conchiglia di Venere. The artwork shows a naked petite girl fixing her reddish hair in front of a mirror. Her back is delicately curved from the weight placed on her knee resting on the chaise lounge.

I came across Jeff Wack's work through one of the blogs I follow, American Gallery, and to be honest, I was very intrigued. I fell in love with almost every one of his images.

The international acclaimed Southern Californian illustrator is known for blending digital photography and digital painting of the female form. Many of his artwork pays homage to previous master artists such as Gustav Klimt, Frida Kahlo, and Sandro Botticelli.

The past few times I've traveled to New Mexico, I bring back The Essential Guide Santa Fe & Taos, which highlights local artists. One of the artists that I have been wanting to blog about is Jim Vogel.

Vogel is originally from Roswell, New Mexico and known for his regionalism paintings of rural New Mexico life. His art resembles that of Thomas Hart Benton.

Arthur Rothstein

My undergraduate studies included many photojournalism classes. In fact, I thought photojournalism would be my career.

During my studies, I learned about the great photojournalists who captured events and life during wars and the Great Depression. One such photojournalist was Arthur Rothstein.

Rothstein is considered America's premier photojournalist. He is most recognized for chronicling life of the rural poor during the Great Depression. Many of his photographs are used when teaching about that era.

Perhaps one of the most captivating photographs he took is of a girl looking out the window. Striking is the juxtaposition of the framed black girl and the framed advertisement of a white woman on the newspaper.

I came across Stephen Pentak while thumbing through The Essential Guide Santa Fe & Taos book, which highlights artists and galleries.

Pentak is known for his landscape paintings of trees and branches against reflective bodies of water and surrounding hills.

Longhorn chicks were hot 70 years ago

In the 2014 premier issue of Austin Way, an article by Jane Kellogg Murray highlights women at the University of Texas during the World War 2. In the article, she discusses how the university actively recruited women to keep the school afloat. You can see the rest of her article HERE.

One thing is for sure, the women in this photograph are beyond hot.

Babies in gas masks

There's been a lot of fear going around because of Ebola. The fear is more spurred because we don't know how exactly one gets Ebola. The only thing we know is that Ebola kills.

According to news agencies, the sale of gas mask and protective suits have increased in the past few weeks because of the fear of Ebola. You can see the articles HERE and HERE.

I came across a picture on Twitter of nurses carrying babies in gas masks. The photo was taken during the 1940s when Germany was bombing London. The British government issued millions of gas masks to its citizens in case German planes would drop gas bombs.

But would gas masks or hazmat suits protect a person from getting Ebola?  Craig Spencer followed Doctors Without Borders' strict procedures while treating Ebola patients, meaning he wore a hazmat suit. Yet, he still got Ebola.

Rather than invest in hazmat suits and gas masks, perhaps we should focus all our resources in finding a cure and mass produce the serum.

Francisco Goya

I came across a great article in the October 27, 2014 issue of TIME Magazine that previewed the exhibition by artist Francisco Goya at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston.

The article started by making a comparison of the 18th Century Goya with the 20th Century Alfred Hitchcock--both liked to put themselves into their creations. The article further provides a history of Goya and even evaluates some of his paintings.

The Spanish romantic painter Francisco Goya was born on March 30, 1746. He is best recognized as the Spanish royal court's artist who painted kings and queens and dukes and duchesses, such as Charles IV and the Duchess of Alba.

Steve Perry - Oh Sherrie

"Hee hee... Teetees!" That's what I said when Steve Perry's music video "Oh Sherrie" would play on MTV or TBS Night Tracks. I was only eight, but I knew seeing tits, even if it were covered, was taboo.

We're all adults now (plus, that was 30 years ago), so my take on this song and music video will be pure appreciation.

Steve Perry wrote the ballad "Oh Sherrie" with Randy Goodrum, Craig Krampf, and Bill Cuomo for his then-girlfriend Sherrie Swafford. The song was his biggest hit as a solo artist and was recently ranked by Rolling Stones Magazine as No. 89 of 100 Best Singles of 1984.

The music video, which was shot at the historic Park Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles, featured Steve Perry in a movie production set of what could be of a Renaissance wedding that turns into a ballad to Sherrie Swafford who comes to visit him on the set.

The braless Sherrie is wearing a white tank top, white ruffle skirt, and red stockings to go with the white pumps. Oh yes, the style of 80's.

She holds a fedora hat and coat, which she brings to Perry to lure him away from the set.

I too would be tempted if a very attractive blonde came to my work in a tank top, skirt and red stockings. Yes, the red stockings does do it for me.

Romel de la Torre

Born in the Philippines, Romel de la Torre is a renowned artist known for his realistic paintings of figures, landscapes, portraits and still life.

I came across his paintings through one of the blogs I follow, the American Gallery. One of the paintings that caught my attention was that of a ballerina waiting before her performance in a painting titled, Backstage. What I like most about this painting is de la Torre's use of reflection and light that shows the girl's beauty and innocence.

I came across a painting of a little girl wearing a red dress on a swing with a teddy bear on her lap on Art Odyssey, a blog that appreciates art. The painting is by a French self-taught artist Claude Jammet who is known for her realistic paintings that captures a dark yet sensual aspect of life.
