When Art and Comedy Crosses the Line?

Art is defined as something that is created with imagination and expresses important ideas or feelings. Yet, are artists limited in their creativity and expression of ideas to fit within the confines of appropriateness? Are artists becoming more provocative and disregarding decency in order to gain notoriety?

This isn't anything new, however. Art is supposed to capture the viewers attention, whether it's the oohs and aahs or boos and hisses. If art makes a group of people talk, then the artist's goal has been met.

Examples of highly provocative art includes: D. W. Griffith's highly controversial 1915 silent film, The Birth of a Nation, which depicted black men as sexually aggressive towards white women; Bernardo Bertolucci's Last Tango in Paris; Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange; Fernando Botero's Abu Ghraib 52Andres Serrano's Piss Christ; or photography and artwork by Gottfried Helnwein and Robert Mapplethorpe.

Last night, comedian Kathy Griffin and provocative photographer Tyler Shields made headlines for a video and image that was tweeted. An unemotional Kathy Griffin is captured holding a severed head of President Donald Trump.

Kathy Griffin tweeted the photo with a caption of "there was blood coming out of his eyes, blood coming out of his...wherever," a reference to Trump's comment to Megyn Kelly, "You could see there was blood coming out of her eyes. Blood coming out of her wherever."

After receiving backlash, Griffin deleted the tweet and provided an apology. Unfortunately, this didn't stop CNN from firing her from the NYE show with Anderson Cooper.

Korn - Freak on a Leash

Music Appreciation

American nu metal band Korn's Freak on a Leash was released on May 25, 1999.

Canadian cartoonist Todd McFarlane directed the music video. And if you are my age, you probably recognize the name Todd McFarlane from his comic book series Spawn.

The music video, which received a Grammy for Best Short Form Music Video, blends both animations and live performances.

The music video starts in a comic-world with a security guard chasing a group of kids who trespass through a secured area to play hopscotch on an edge. As the security guard trips, his gun is released from his hand, and a bullet is fired towards a girl playing hopscotch. The bullet travels past her and through a wall into a real-world. The bullet becomes somewhat magical as it damages several things and at one point hovers around the band members (Jonathan Davis, Munky Shaffer, Head Welch, Fieldy Arvizu, and David Silveria) before returning to the comic-world where the little girl grabs the bullet and hands it to the security guard.

Beastie Boys - Intergalactic

Music Appreciation

I was in my young 20s when I first heard Beastie Boys' Intergalactic. Actually, I believe I watched their music video on MTV before I heard it on the radio. The American hip-hop group had been around since the mid-80s. They were popular back then and they garnered a new group of younger audience in the 90s.

The music video featured a giant robot fighting an octopus-headed creature, while the Beastie Boys (Mike D, MCA, and Ad-Rock) ran around various sites in Tokyo dressed in a white jumpsuit, white construction hard hat, with a yellow strap vest, yellow dish gloves, and yellow rubber boots.

The song, which was released on May 12, 1998, received a Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group in 1999. The music video, which was directed by Nathanial Hörnblowér (aka Adam Yauch or MCA), won the award for Best Hip-Hop Video at the 1999 MTV Video Music Awards.

President Trump Relaxes Tax Law on Churches

Pardon the Interruption

The Johnson Amendment was introduced by then-Senator Lyndon B. Johnson to extend the provisions of Section 501 of the tax bill adopted in 1954. As presented by the Texas Senator, the provision would deny “tax exempt status to not only those people who influence legislation but also to those who intervene in any political campaign on behalf of any candidate for any public office.”

The amendment was conceived after Senator Johnson faced difficulty during his re-election campaign where churches were thought to have been conducting electioneering in support of his opponent. The Republican-led House and Senate passed the legislation and the bill was signed into law by Republican President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

The President’s new Executive Order relaxes the Johnson Amendment restrictions on political activities by churches and other tax-exempt institutions. The Executive Order, however, does not only give churches and pastors free speech, but also allows churches to financially contribute to candidates and campaigns without IRS action.

If the PEW Research Center finds Evangelicals being the largest religious group associated with the GOP, then one could expect large monetary contributions in all future elections. While many of us find cable TV unbearable to watch during election season because of the many campaign commercials, imagine commercials featuring religious leaders like Pat Robertson telling us who we should elect in the next election.

Gotcha (1985)

Film Appreciation

If you are my age, then you probably remember watching Anthony Edwards and Linda Fiorentino in the 1985 comedy action film, Gotcha!

Like many of you, TV and movies was my way to learn about history, culture, and politics. At a young age, this movie exposed me to learn more about the Cold War and how we didn't trust our WWII ally, Russia. Spies vs. Spies. And even after 20 years, it seems we still don't trust each other.

Gotcha! was directed by Jeff Kanew with a few scenes filmed in West Berlin. Although it didn't perform well in the Box Office, it did spawn a Nintendo game.
