A Game Changer, Indeed

Pardon the Interruption

It's a game changer, indeed. A few weeks ago, after immense pressure from his party following a disastrous debate performance, President Joe Biden called off his campaign for a second term and endorsed his VP, Kamala Harris. This move shocked everyone, especially the Republican Party and Donald Trump. Up until Biden's announcement, Trump and his crew were hammering away at Biden's age and alertness. My guess is, a lot of cash was spent on anti-Biden messaging, and now the Trump campaign will have to cough up more funds to go after Harris. We all know Trump hates spending money he could've used for other things, like legal expenses.

This also shakes up the race's dynamics: now, we have a middle-aged woman of color running against a white elder. The Trump campaign and its supporters are scrambling to criticize Harris without mentioning her race or gender, sticking to calling her a "liberal." Meanwhile, Harris is reminding voters of her background as a prosecutor and her experience taking down crooks and felons, like Donald J. Trump.

Needless to say, this summer has been pretty wild. We started with Biden struggling to gain support and momentum, then Trump almost being assassinated, followed by Biden announcing he wouldn’t seek re-election, then Trump's VP choice not humping a couch, to Harris re-energizing the Democratic Party.

Buckle up, folks; it's going to be an interesting ride!

Maria Checa

Acting Appreciation

When I was a senior in high school, I subscribed to Playboy Magazine. I'm not sure if I sent in a check or if I used my dad's credit card, unbeknownst to him.

Since I still lived with my parents, I would rush home everyday to check the mail for my magazine. Sometimes I wasn't so luck to grab the mail before mom. I'm sure I lost a few magazines due to her arriving home earlier than me.

Anyway, there was one month I remember vividly because it featured Carol Shaya on the cover and Maria Checa, a stunning brunette, as centerfold Playmate of the Month.

Maria Checa was born on July 29, 1970 in Bogotá, Colombia. She moved to Florida with her family as a child. She attended the New World School of Arts, a high school for artistically gifted teens. Around that time, she began a modeling career at the age of 15.

After graduating high school, she attended Maryland Institute College of Art. Finances forced her to return to Miami, where she became a makeup artist for photo shoots as well as a model.

At the time, what caught my attention was reading Checa's data sheet. She's an artist. Checa is a self-proclaimed visual artist, with interest in black and white photography, painting, charcoal sketching, sculpting, and mixed media art.

She was my ideal mate. Her turn-ons and turnoffs matched mine. She liked romantic candlelight dinners overseeing the ocean at sunset, and hated dishonest people and those who are late. Plus, she's petite, 5'2".

Soon after being featured in the January 1994 Playboy 40th Anniversary edition, she grew in popularity. She posed for several Playboy special edition publications and appeared in many Playboy videos.

As a model, Checa has appeared in numerous magazines and worked for major fashion brands. She acted in the films Seven Coffees on a Week and From Dusk Till Dawn 2: Texas Blood Money

Fashion is DEFINITELY Art: Abercrombie & Fitch | Summer Fall 2024

Abercrombie & Fitch is back. Well, at least that's what was discussed on a recent Vox podcast interview with Fast Company staff writer Elizabeth Segran.

Back in '99, Abercrombie & Fitch was the go-to brand for cool teens, but things went south fast due to some seriously problematic behavior. They got slammed for being racist and super exclusive, and by 2016, they were dubbed the most hated retailer. Ouch!

But in 2019, Abercrombie started a low-key comeback, rebranding with a fresh focus on inclusivity. They ditched the old hyper-sexualized vibe, brought in diverse models, expanded their sizes, and introduced sleek, everyday styles perfect for young adults. Instead of a big flashy relaunch, they teamed up with social media influencers to spread the word.

And guess what? It worked! Abercrombie turned things around in a huge way. By 2023, they were the top-performing stock on the S&P index. Now, Abercrombie's back in the game, proving that even the most controversial brands can reinvent themselves with the right moves.

Justice's career began with a focus on fetish photography, a niche that was widely recognized at the time. Her work quickly gained attention for its unique style and daring subject matter, leading her to expand into other genres, including erotica, pin-up, and celebrity portraits. James Brolin

Acting Appreciation

James Brolin, born Craig Kenneth Bruderlin on July 18, 1940, in Westwood Village, Los Angeles, California, grew up in a family with no ties to the entertainment industry. His father was a building contractor, and his mother was a homemaker. However, from an early age, Brolin showed a keen interest in acting, spurred by his admiration for James Dean. Captivated by Dean's performances, he began shooting his own 8 mm films, experimenting with filmmaking techniques and honing his acting skills.

Brolin's passion for acting led him to pursue formal education in the arts. He attended Santa Monica City College before transferring to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he studied drama. His dedication and talent soon caught the attention of industry professionals, and he signed a contract with 20th Century Fox. This opportunity marked the beginning of Brolin's professional acting career, allowing him to transition from a film enthusiast to a Hollywood actor. His acting debut was in a 1961 episode of "Bus Stop."

Throughout his career, James Brolin has portrayed numerous memorable characters. Among his most famous roles is his portrayal of Dr. Steven Kiley in the television series "Marcus Welby, M.D.," which aired from 1969 to 1976. His performance as the charming and compassionate doctor earned him a Golden Globe Award and solidified his status as a television star. In film, one of his notable roles was in the 1973 sci-fi thriller "Westworld," where he played John Blane, a visitor to a futuristic amusement park who faces unexpected dangers.

Perhaps most memorable is his cameo appearance in the 1985 cult classic "Pee-wee's Big Adventure," playing a parody version of himself. In the film's meta-movie sequence, Brolin portrays "P.W. Herman," a suave, Hollywood-ized version of Pee-wee Herman, complete with action hero traits and romantic charisma. His character is part of a humorous fictionalized Hollywood adaptation of Pee-wee's own adventure, adding a layer of comedic irony and self-awareness to the film. Brolin's performance, though brief, contributed to the film's playful tone and enduring appeal.

James Brolin's legacy extends beyond his own accomplishments, as he is also the father of acclaimed actor Josh Brolin and grandfather to Eden Brolin. Josh Brolin has built a successful career with roles in films such as "W." and as Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Eden Brolin has made her mark in television, particularly with her role in the series "Yellowstone."

Berenice Abbott

Photography Appreciation

I first encountered the name Berenice Abbott after learning about the renowned French documentary photographer Eugène Atget. Berenice Abbott, born on July 17, 1898, in Springfield, Ohio, was an influential American photographer known for her captivating images that document urban life. She attended Ohio State University before embarking on a transformative journey to Paris, where she studied sculpture under the guidance of Emile Bourdelle. Her time in Paris marked a significant period of artistic growth and exploration, eventually leading her to work as an assistant to the American visual artist Man Ray.

It was Man Ray who introduced Abbott to the remarkable works of Eugène Atget. Captivated by Atget's photographs, Abbott requested him to sit for a portrait. Tragically, soon after their meeting, Atget passed away. This encounter had a profound impact on Abbott, shaping her own photographic journey. Inspired by Atget's documentation of Paris streets and architecture, Abbott dedicated herself to capturing the essence of urban life, particularly focusing on New York City.

Two of Berenice Abbott's most infamous photographs are "Nightview, New York" (1932) and "The Flatiron Building" (1938). "Nightview, New York" is a stunning image taken from a high vantage point, showcasing the city's illuminated skyline in a mesmerizing play of light and shadow. The photograph captures the dynamic energy and architectural grandeur of New York at night. "The Flatiron Building," on the other hand, is an iconic portrayal of one of the city's most recognizable landmarks. Abbott's composition highlights the building's unique triangular shape and its towering presence amidst the urban landscape. These photographs exemplify her ability to convey the spirit and vibrancy of urban environments.

Charles Sheeler

Art Appreciation

Charles Sheeler, born on July 16, 1883, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is a pivotal figure in American modernism and a leading exponent of precisionism. He studied at the Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Art and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts under renowned impressionist painter William Merritt Chase, which laid the foundation for his distinctive artistic style.

Inspired by the geometric forms and structured compositions of Cubist artists like Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, Sheeler merged these influences to create artworks that celebrate the industrial landscape with meticulous detail and clarity.

Sheeler's precisionism is exemplified in his iconic paintings "Upper Deck" and "American Landscape." "Upper Deck," painted in 1929, captures the stark, clean lines of a transatlantic ocean liner, transforming the ship into geometric shapes bathed in light and shadow. Similarly, "American Landscape," completed in 1930, portrays the Ford River Rouge Plant in Dearborn, Michigan. Sheeler presents the factory as a modern cathedral, emphasizing the beauty of industrial architecture and its significance in the American landscape.

Getting in Shape

Since being diagnosed with liver fibrosis, I’ve committed to working out more and cutting back on my alcohol intake. If you ask me how it's going, I'll be honest: it's a real struggle. I do sneak a drink or two on occasion, but not as often as before. Baby steps, right?

Setting aside time to work out requires planning. Sometimes it's tough to muster up the energy to get to the gym, especially when dealing with rush hour traffic. It's so easy to take the early exit to home sweet home rather than staying on and taking the following exit to the gym. After all, my couch and I have an unspoken bond that’s hard to break.

Luckily, my best friend and best man keeps encouraging me to make it to the gym, even when I'm tempted to get home, strip off my street clothes, and lounge my way to a catnap before dinner. Everyone needs a gym buddy for encouragement, especially someone as determined (and sometimes lazy) as me to get in shape!

William Turner Dannat

Art Appreciation

William Turner Dannat, born on July 9, 1853, in Hempstead, New York, was a notable American artist recognized for his vibrant portrayals of Spanish life. His early education took him abroad at the age of twelve, where he initially studied architecture in Hanover and Stuttgart. However, his passion for art soon prevailed, leading him to the Munich Royal Academy of Fine Arts. Furthering his artistic journey, Dannat moved to Paris to study under Mihály Munkácsy, a Hungarian master known for his dramatic realism.

Two of Dannat's most significant works exemplify his skill and unique artistic vision. "The Quartette" is one of his renowned paintings, celebrated for its dynamic and expressive depiction of musicians engrossed in their performance. This piece garnered substantial attention and acclaim at the Paris Salon of 1884, solidifying his reputation in the art world. Another noteworthy painting is "Le Contrebandier Aragonais," which the French government purchased in 1883. This work, housed at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, showcases Dannat's exceptional ability to capture the essence and character of his subjects with vivid detail and emotional depth.

Throughout his career, Dannat's art was heavily influenced by his European mentors and the cultural milieu he immersed himself in. His work was well-received in Europe, often drawing comparisons to other great American expatriates like John Singer Sargent and James McNeill Whistler. Despite his success, Dannat took a lengthy hiatus from painting, during which he pursued other interests such as fencing and boxing. When he resumed his artistic endeavors around 1913, his style had evolved to incorporate more surrealistic elements.

From Presidents to Kings: The Erosion of Checks and Balances in Modern America

Pardon the Interruption

Everything I learned in college about the presidency and the Supreme Court has been turned upside down.

Last week, the Supreme Court overturned a longstanding precedent that required courts to defer to reasonable agency decisions when federal law is silent or unclear. This new decision means that courts no longer have to accept federal agencies' expertise when reviewing challenged regulations.

Then, on July 1st, the Supreme Court decided that presidents have absolute immunity for "official acts." This is far from what we were taught in government class. We learned that the U.S. Constitution establishes three separate but equal branches of government, each accountable to the others, creating a system of checks and balances to maintain a steady balance of power.

The textbooks emphasized that presidents don't get everything they want and that the presidency is an elected position with authority equal to and independent of the national legislature. For 248 years, it has been understood that the president is not a king, queen, pharaoh, or emperor. Granted, some presidents have found ways to overcome limitations, sometimes using covert methods that led to trouble, such as Richard Nixon spying on his "enemies" and Reagan authorizing arms sales to Iran. Nixon resigned after facing impeachment, and Reagan took full responsibility for the affair on national television. Now, the Supreme Court has decided that those instances were within the scope of presidential "official acts."

In reality, these cases highlight why Republicans have sought to fill the Supreme Court bench with conservatives. According to this logic, Nixon shouldn't have been impeached, Reagan had every reason to sell arms to Iran, but Bill Clinton should have been impeached because he had sex with an intern.

Now, the head of the Republican Party is inching closer to being re-elected as president. He has repeatedly indicated his plans to hold those accountable by sending "never-Trumpers" to jail and mentioned that he plans to be a dictator on the first day of his presidency. We can't ignore these comments or dismiss them as banter. Donald Trump is serious about what he says and what he plans to do on day one if he returns to office.

Meanwhile, we have an 81-year-old president who seems to be becoming less cognitive by the day. President Biden's poor performance in the recent debate has many in the Democratic Party worried that this election is lost. Some are already calling for him to step down. Even U.S. Congressman Lloyd Doggett, an Austin liberal, is asking Biden to let someone else take the helm.

If Biden decides not to continue his campaign, his delegates will have to select a new candidate at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on August 19th. Will the convention mirror the chaos of 1968, which also took place in Chicago? What will the outcome be? Who would be the candidate? Can a candidate gather enough support before Election Day in November? This is a very scary time for many of us because the outcome will determine the next "king."

John Singleton Copley

Art Appreciation

John Singleton Copley, born on July 3, 1738, in Boston, was a seminal figure in the development of American art. Despite having little formal training, Copley became a masterful self-taught painter, renowned for his striking portraits and historical scenes. His ability to capture the essence of his subjects with meticulous detail and vibrant realism set him apart from his contemporaries and established him as a leading artist in colonial America.

One of Copley's most significant works is "Boy with a Squirrel" (1765), a portrait of his half-brother Henry Pelham. This painting showcased Copley's remarkable skill in rendering textures and materials, from the softness of the boy’s skin to the intricate details of the squirrel's fur and the glass of water. The painting was brought to London for an exhibition, where it received praise from artists. Historians would later consider the work pivotal in both Copley's career and the history of American art.

Another important work by Copley is "Watson and the Shark" (1778), which depicts the harrowing rescue of Brook Watson, who lost his leg to a shark attack in Havana harbor. The painting is notable not only for its dynamic composition and emotional intensity but also for its departure from Copley’s typical portraiture. It demonstrated his ability to convey action and narrative on a grand scale, further cementing his reputation as a versatile and innovative artist.

Copley’s "The Death of Major Peirson" (1783) is a powerful historical painting that captures the heroic defense of Jersey during the American Revolutionary War. The composition, with its vivid depiction of battle and poignant portrayal of sacrifice, illustrates Copley’s mastery of both color and form. This painting, like many of his works, reflects his keen interest in historical themes and his ability to convey complex emotions through art.

Violet Rain

Acting Appreciation

I recall encountering an adult video featuring the stunning and charming Violet Rain, who portrayed herself caught shoplifting. To escape her predicament, she gives the store manager a memorable experience.

Jazmine Nicole Dominguez, better known as Violet Rain, was born on July 2, 1999, in Phoenix, Arizona. Raised by her grandmother, Violet developed an interest in modeling from a young age. This sweet, down-to-earth girl moved to Los Angeles to pursue her modeling dreams.

Violet entered the adult entertainment industry at age 18. One of her earliest scenes was for Net Video Girls in August 2018. The 5'7" brunette starred in more than 40 scenes during her one year in the industry.

On March 3, 2019, Violet reportedly visited a club in North Hollywood and was later found at the emergency room of Adventist Health White Memorial Hospital in East Los Angeles the following morning. It is believed she may have overdosed on cocaine laced with fentanyl. Violet passed away on March 13, 2019.

During an episode of the Holly Randall Unfiltered podcast, photographer and writer Gustavo Turner shared his insights into the struggles of young adult film stars like Violet Rain with drugs. He explained, "Just as middle-class kids experiment in college, these girls come from different backgrounds. They come to Hollywood at a college age, but they are not protected by a university or campus police. So, when they experiment in the real world, they're actually in L.A., in Hollywood. They are doing nothing different than what upper-middle-class girls do at university."
