Tracks 83: Music Mix 1983

When I was little, before we had MTV, I looked forward to the weekends and staying up late to watch Night Tracks on TBS. For me, Night Tracks became the looking glass to a totally different world.

Being from deep south Texas, a Catholic conservative and predominantly Mexican-American area, watching Boy George (Culture Club) was something very new, but my parents never censored my viewing habits--although, my mom still changes the channel when there is a sex scene on TV.

I was seven years old when I was exposed to the amazing world of music videos. Videos gave life to the music on the radio. And as a very imaginative kid, it allowed me to mimic performances and dances, especially Michael Jackson's Billie Jean and Jennifer Beals' Flashdance dance moves.

Daryl Hall & John Oates - Family Man
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - You Got Lucky
Spandau Ballet - True
Stray Cats - (She's) Sexy & 17
Joe Jackson - Steppin' Out
Culture Club - I'll Tumble 4 Ya
Loverboy - Hot Girls In Love
Elton John - I'm Still Standing
Naked Eyes - Promises Promises
Kinks - Come Dancing
The Tubes - She's A Beauty
Laura Branigan - Gloria
Men At Work - Overkill
Madness - Our House
The Clash - Rock the Casbah
Adam Ant - Goody Two Shoes
Naked Eyes - Always Something There to Remind Me
Billy Joel - Tell Her About It
Irene Cara - What A Feeling (Flashdance)
Michael Jackson - Billie Jean

R.I.P. Hugh Hefner...

I remember being a few months shy of 18 and subscribing to Playboy magazine. Back then, magazine subscriptions were done by mail, and I believe I ordered my Playboy through a catalog I was provided at a college fair.

I checked the mailbox daily waiting for my magazine to be delivered. Finally, it was delivered and I quickly fell in love with cover girl Heidi Mark and Playmate Becky DeLosSantos.

Then another Playmates were introduced, and I fell in love with each and every one, especially the the following:

May 1994 - Christy Shae Marks
September 1994 - Kelly Gallagher
May 1995 - Cynthia Gwyn Brown

And of course, I thank the late and great Hugh Hefner for introducing gorgeous women to the 18 year old me. Because of him, I came to appreciate the female body in a very tasteful and respectful way.

Pearl Jam - Jeremy

Music Appreciation

Inspired by an event which occurred in Richardson, Texas, Eddie Vedder wrote the lyrics to Jeremy. The high school sophomore, Jeremy Wade Delle, shot himself dead with a .357-caliber Magnum in front of his English class.

The music video, which was directed by Mark Pellington, received four MTV Video Music Awards, including Best Video of the Year.

Prelude with images of news-clipping of teens and gun violence, the music video tells a story of a boy named Jeremy who was neglected and bullied who eventually "spoke in class."

"Amateur Porn and Pecan Festival"

I received a social club event announcement email this morning with the subject line "Amateur Porn and Pecan Festival?" I had to look twice at the subject line again to make sure I read it correctly and enunciated it, "Am-uh-choo-r pawrn and pi-kahn fes--tuh-vuh l question mark."

Naturally, I clicked on the email, and found the "Amateur Porn" reference. It's Dan Savage's Hump! Film Festival, which is being held in Austin today and tomorrow. Oh!

Dan Savage is an American author and LGBT community activist who writes a sex column, Savage Love, and is credited for pulling off one of the best pranks in political history when he provided an alternative definition for santorum (U.S. Senator Rick Santorum): "the frothy mixture of lube and fecal matter that is sometimes the by-product of anal sex."

Savage coordinates the annual Hump! Film Festival, where individuals, who aren't professional porn stars, submit short films of kinks, fetishes, and fantasies.

Check out the website for more info HERE.

Antonín Dvořák

Music Appreciation

Born in the village of Nelahozeves, near Prague, on September 8, 1841, Antonín Dvořák was a Czech composer best known for his work, Symphony No 9 E minor "From the New World."

Dvořák learned to play the violin, when he was 6 years old, then was taught the organ, piano and music theory. At the age of 16, he moved to Prague and entered the organ school. Two years later, he joined Karel Komzák’s orchestra, which played in restaurants and balls, then the Provisional Theater Orchestra.

In his early 20s he began composing opus and symphonies. He left the Provisional Theater in 1871 to focus more on composing. After submitting 15 of his work for the Austrian State Prize for Compositions, he was awarded the prize in 1874, 1876 and 1877. Johannes Brahms, who's a leading member, and Eduard Hanslick made themselves known to Dvořák and referred him to their publisher, Nikolaus Simrock.

In 1884, the London Philharmonic Society commissioned Dvořák. His Symphony No. 7 was written for London was premiered at St. James's Hall on April 22, 1885.

The London Philharmonic Society commissioned Dvořák to conduct concerts in London, and his performances were well received there.[62] In response to the commission, Dvořák wrote his Symphony No. 7 and conducted the premiere of the symphony at St. James's Hall on 22 April 1885.

From 1892 to 1895, Dvořák was the director of the National Conservatory of Music in New York City. He was commissioned to write Symphony No. 9 "From the New World."
