#WhenLifeGivesUsLemons

Weekend in Houston Art

My parents and I have a non-traditional way of celebrating Thanksgiving. Perhaps it's more due to the fact that I'm the only child, so there isn't a reason to congregate at mom and pop's. Rather, we spend our day in Houston at the Galleria Mall--my mom loves to shop.

While in Houston, we did visit the Menil Collection. The museum houses the private collection of philanthropists and art patrons John and Dominique de Menil.

Their collection included works by John Chamberlain, Andy Warhol, Rene Magritte, Mark Rothko, Pablo Picasso, Max Ernst, Jasper Johns, Cy Twombly, Victor Brauner, James Rosenquist, and Robert Rauschenberg.

We also visited the Francis Alys' The Fabiola Project and The Rothko Chapel, which are steps away the museum.

The following day, I visited the Contemporary Art Museum. There I saw the ceramics works by Annabeth Rosen and a visual exhibition by Pauline Boudry and Renate Lorenz titled Telepathic Improvisation.

I then found myself at the Silver Street Flea Market. A few artists were showing their works, such as Lindsay Burck and Sarah Rimboch.

Next to the market was the Fotofest. There I saw the photography by Kalee Appleton, Rachel Cox, Joe Harjo, Peter Leighton, Emily Peacock, and Molly Shigemoto.

The world was introduced with the first case of Mad Cow Disease, in 1986. The Soviet Union also launched their Mir space station, and the Rutan Voyager flew around the world without stopping or refueling.

We were also introduced to a new subgenre that combined rock and rap with Run-DMC's and Aerosmith's Walk This Way.

Run-DMC - Walk This Way
The Cars - Tonight She Comes
Dream Academy - Life in a Northern Town
Michael McDonald - Sweet Freedom (1986)

El Lissitzky

Art Appreciation

Lazar Markovich Lissitzky, also known as El Lissitzky, was born on November 23, 1890. The Russian artist and designer was an important figure of the Russian avant-garde's Suprematism art movement.

Born in a small Jewish town of Pochinok, El Lissitzky started drawing at a young age. In 1909, he studied architectural engineering at Darmstadt University of Technology in Germany. After traveling throughout Europe, and learning about ancient Jewish culture, he returned to Moscow and attended the Polytechnic Institute of Riga.

While working for architectural firms, El Lissitzky further explored his interest in Jewish culture by studying traditional architecture and ornaments of old synagogues and illustrating Yiddish children's books.

El Lissitzky returned to Vitebsk, in 1919, to teach graphic art, printing, and architecture at the People's Art School. There, he designed and printed propaganda posters that favored Bolsheviks.

Along with Kazimir Malevich, El Lissitzky introduced an art movement known as Suprematism, a form of abstract art which relies heavily on basic geometric forms and color. For El Lissitzky, many of his work, during this time, were heavily political. He then started to explore and further develop the suprematist style to create a series of abstract and geometic paintings known as Proun--defined as "the station where one changes from painting to architecture."

In 1921, El Lissitzky moved to Berlin and became the cultural representative of Russia, where he established contacts between Russian and German artists. While in Berlin, he developed his career as a graphic designer. He also proposed and developed the idea of the Wolkenbügel, a horizontal skyscraper.

In 1928, El Lissitzky presented a program that revolved around the theme of a film show. It featured continuous presentations of movies, propagandist newsreels and animation.

El Lissitzky died in Moscow on December 30, 1941.

You can see more of his work HERE.

Wizard World Austin 2017

I have to say, this year's Wizard World Austin Comic Con outdid itself. I absolutely enjoyed the exhibitors, the panels, and the cosplayers.

My day started later than what I planned--thanks to CapMetro Rail and Chuy's Children's Parade. Nonetheless, I got to the Convention Center and started my day by watching trailers of upcoming movies.

SuperKayceCosplay and RealBreakingNate presented a series of movie trailers and provided their insights on each. There seemed to be anticipation for the new Star Wars movie from the audience. Personally, I'm looking forward to not only The Last Jedi but also the arcade-based-movie Rampage.

I sat in on a brief history discussion on Dr. Who before attending the very entertaining Michael Rooker. If you don't know who Rooker is, go HERE, HERE, HERE and HERE.

As many of you know, I'm a big Star Trek fan. I've met Armin Shimerman, Robin Curtis, the late James Doohan, Sir Patrick Stewart, and the great William Shatner. This year, I got to meet Ms. Nichelle Nichols and got her to sign a trading card I had been holding on to since 1991.

After coming down from a high, I sat in on a discussion panel with Kevin Conroy and Loren Lester discussing 25 years of Batman: The Animated Series.

I then snuck out of Batman and Robin to watch Felicia Day in a Q&A. The cool thing I learned about Felicia Day is that her formative years were spent in Austin. If you don't know who she is or what she has contributed in the geek-realm, check out HERE, HERE, and HERE.

I then sat in on a Firefly cast reunion with Summer Glau, Sean Maher, and Jewel Staite. Sean Maher was quite entertaining to watch as he interacted with Jewel and Summer. What I got out of the panel is that Summer was blamed for things that went wrong in the show, even when she was not around. Also, Nathan Fillion is a huge Firefly fan, who has show memorabilia around his home.

My day ended watching the extremely talented cosplayers compete in the Wizard World Costume Contest.

Some of the exhibitors I visited included: Kristina Cantu, Brent WoodsideDavid Soto Jr., JeriLyn Alderman from Firechilde Glass Studio, Cassie Small with Randon Smash Customs, Ryan Glitch with Sci-Fi Speed Dating (I shied away from participating), the guys from Hops and Heroes, and the gals from Shivs and Giggles.

Aerosmith - Pink

Music Appreciation

Pink helped me not only be self-aware of my sexuality and fetishes at 21 but also accept that although we are different, we are all pink inside.

Written by Steven Tyler, Richie Supa and Glen Ballard, the song was released on November 18, 1997. The song reached No. 27 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The music video, which was directed by Doug Nichol, features the band members morphing into different people with various fetishes and kinks.

Tracks 83: Music Mix 1986

I remember us kids being called in from recess to meet inside the school's gym. Our principal shared the news that the Space Shuttle Challenger had exploded shortly after takeoff. The teachers were devastated; understandably since Christa McAuliffe was one of the seven astronauts who perished.

Several things happened in entertainment that year: Mike Tyson becomes youngest Heavyweight Champion and the Oprah Winfrey Show makes its debut. Top Gun, Crocodile Dundee, Star Trek: The Voyage Home, and Aliens were a few of my favorite movies that year.

Planning My Saturday at Austin's Wizard World Comic Con

I can't wait for Saturday. It's Wizard World Comic Con in Austin, and that means I get to geek out to the various TV and movie actors, aisles of exhibitors and vendors, discussion panels and Q&A's, and the tons of cosplayers.

This is a full day event for me, where I arrive at 10 AM and don't leave until about 9 PM. And for the past few hours, I've been planning my day by highlighting the programming and setting priorities.

11:00 AM - 11:30 AM - Austin Acroart (Entertainment Stage)

I have an appreciation for acroyoga, a combination of acrobatics and yoga, so this performance should be entertaining.

11:30 AM - 12:15 PM - Trailer Park (Room 6)

I love watching TV and movie trailers.

12:30 PM - 1:15 PM - Doctor Who: A Brief History of the Classic Series (Room 4)

I've caught a few episodes of Doctor Who... the Ninth and Eleventh Doctor; however, I'd like to get a little brief history of the series. I might stay for a bit.

12:45 PM - 1:15 PM - Cos-Spray: The Art of Cosplay (Entertainment Stage)

Cosplay... Is An Art. So... I might skip the Doctor Who and watch this performance instead.

1:00 PM - 2:30 PM - Sci-Fi Speed Dating Session  (Room 3)

When I was about 18, I placed an ad on the Star Trek Communicator seeking my Vulcan Princess. So, when I read the description, "Are you tired of lookin' for love in Alderaan places?" I saw it as a sign that I must participate.

1:00 PM - 1:45 PM - Michael Rooker Vs The Audience (Ballroom A)

I'm a fan of Michael Rooker. So, if I chicken out of the speed dating, I might just sit in and watch Merle Dixon talk.

2:00 PM - 2:45 PM - I Assure You They're Open: A Clerks Conversation With Jason Mewes and Brian O'halloran (Ballroom A)

2:45 PM - Nichelle Nichols

I've been holding on to a trading card of Uhura since 1991. It would be great if I could get it signed by Ms. Nichols.

4:00 PM - 4:45 PM - Queen of the Nerds: A Conversation with Felicia Day (Ballroom A)

5:00 PM - 5:45 PM - Firefly Cast Reunion With Jewel Staite, Summer Glau and Sean Mahar (Ballroom A)

7:00 PM - 9:00 PM - Wizard World Costume Contest

This is the highlight of the event. I love watching cosplayers present their creativity.

10:00 PM - 2:00 AM - Wizard World After Party

Depending on how my Saturday goes, I might make my way to The Blind Pig Pub.

SEE YA'LL AT AUSTIN'S WW COMIC CON.

Collective Soul - The World I Know

Music Appreciation

When I was a teenager, fresh out of high school, I was a big Collective Soul fan. For the following ten years I purchased all their albums and even created my version of "The Best of..."

The World I Know, was a song written by Ed Roland and Ross Childress. It was released on November 14, 1995.

The music video features a man about to commit suicide. As he is about to jump, a pigeon lands on his shoulder. His pain is replaced with somewhat of a spiritual realization or an epiphany of the purpose of life.

Frida Castelli

Art Appreciation

I came across a work by Frida Castelli titled Love Unconditional from a blog I follow, Art Mirrors Art. It shows a naked girl licking the mirror's reflection of herself. The title provides the narrative that the girl loves herself unconditionally.

Not much is known of the Italian illustrator; however, Castelli's work, as a writer explains, qualifies her as a "artist, photographer, poet and teacher of eroticism."

In an interview with Luci Erre Gi of L'Insicuro, Castelli explained that she uses the following technique and utensils: "Each design is born with the idea of representing a state of mind as precisely as possible, in order to communicate it in a clear and detailed way. The process thus arises with a moment of reflection and analysis, scanning all the emotions as if they were objects to be retrieved in a basement, put them in order, catalog them, and finally expose them. On the practical side, it's about making some quick drafts, define it with the pencil and then color it. As background colors use ecoline inks, I define the shadows with colored pencils and finally sketch contours with Pantone markers. "

You can see more of her erotic work HERE.

Veteran's Day

The concept of honoring those who served in the military started with President Woodrow Wilson on November 11, 1919 following the one year anniversary of the armistice between the Allies and Germany.

On June 4, 1926, the U.S. Congress adopted a resolution to celebrate Armistice Day as a legal holiday. In 1945, the holiday was expanded to celebrate all veterans. Then in 1954, Congress replaced "Armistice" with "Veterans."

Thank a Veteran, today.

Tracks 83: Music Mix 1985 Part 2

What I remember about 1985 were the many iconic films, such as Back to the Future, and The Breakfast Club. Both films produced memorable songs: Simple Minds' Don't You and Huey Lewis and the News' Power of Love.

Miami Vice, the popular TV show, had a significant influence in music and fashion. Sinéad O'Connor, Kate Bush, Phil Collins, Bryan Adams, Tina Turner, Power Station, and Willy Nelson contributed their music to the show. The Italian men's fashion of a sports coat, t-shirt, white linen pants, loafers, and the five o'clock shadow was popularized by the show's two main characters, Crockett and Tubbs.

Daryl Hall & John Oates - Method of Modern Love
The Power Station - Some Like It Hot
Julian Lennon - Valotte
Eurythmics - Would I Lie to You?
Bruce Springsteen - Glory Days
Sade - Smooth Operator
Madonna - Material Girl
Animotion - Obsession
Phil Collins - Sussudio
Aretha Franklin - Freeway of Love
Chicago - You're the Inspiration

Carl Theodor Thiemann

Art Appreciation

Born on November 10, 1881, Carl Theodor Thiemann was an Austrian-German painter, lithographer, and woodcutter known for his graphic methods. He was a member of the Vienna Secession, an art movement formed in 1897 by a group of Austrian artists, and of the German Artists' Union. Abe Weiner

Art Appreciation

American artist Abe Weiner was born on November 5, 1917. The surreal realist artist is known for using nature as a common theme in his artwork.

As described in his biography by Jonathan Weiner, "Weiner’s work often reflects the dark themes of life itself, decay and destruction, struggle and anguish. Yet the contrasting theme in his paintings has always been regeneration, rebirth, renewal and hope. That message with its timeless thread is one we need to hear today and tomorrow."

You can see his many wonderful work HERE.

Robert Mapplethorpe

Photography Appreciation

Born on November 4, 1946, Robert Mapplethorpe was an American photographer known for his black and white photography of celebrity portraits, male and female nudes, still-life images of flowers, and self portraits.

One of Mapplethorpe's photography series spurred controversy. The Perfect Moment, a traveling exhibition funded by the National Endowment for the Arts--public funds--featured many sexually explicit images.

Mapplethorpe established the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation, which not only secures his work, but promotes his creative vision and funds HIV/AIDS research. He passed away due to complications from HIV/AIDS on March 9, 1989.
