Tracks 83: Music Mix 1984 Part 2

I had a huge crush on Susan Gallagher (The Cars' You Might Think), Christie Brinkley (Billy Joel's Uptown Girl), and Sherrie Swafford (Steve Perry's Oh Sherrie), when I was eight years old.

But while I was subconsciously discovering my preference in the opposite sex, there were two iconic films that I, like many my age, absolutely loved: Footloose, Purple Rain, and Ghostbusters.

The Cars - You Might Think
ZZ Top - Legs
Pat Benatar - Love is a Battlefield
Elton John - Sad Songs
Shannon - Let the Music Play
The Pointer Sisters - Automatic
The Cars - Drive
Billy Joel - Uptown Girl
Eurythmics - Here Comes the Rain Again
Billy Idol - Eyes Without a Face
Corey Hart - Sunglasses at Night
Madonna - Borderline
Steve Perry - Oh Sherrie
Nena - 99 Luftballons
Cyndi Lauper - Girls Just Want to Have Fun
Culture Club - Karma Chameleon
Tina Turner - What's Love Got to do With This
Prince - When Doves Cry
Kenny Loggins - Footloose
Ray Parker Jr. - Ghostbusters

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - You Got Lucky

Music Appreciation

On October 2, 2017, we lost a music legend, Tom Petty. To mark the musicians' 67th birthday, the City of Austin declared October 20th as "Tom Petty Day," and Sun Radio 100.1 FM in Austin dedicated the whole day to celebrate his contribution to music.

Released on October 22, 1982, You Got Lucky was the first single from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' Long After Dark album. The song reached no. 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 and no. 1 on the Billboard Top Tracks chart.

Directed by Jim Lenahan, the Mad Max-esque post-apocalyptic music video shows Tom Petty and Mike Campbell, who are then accompanied by the rest of the band, come across a boombox and bring to life a music studio found under a tent.

98 Days Until Vegas and the AVN Awards Red Carpet

It's a trip us guys make annually.

The rules are simple: no pictures; no pictures; and no pictures.

But the guys trip isn't anything like The Hangover. However, if you were to put together 10 years worth of Vegas trips then maybe there'd be a blockbuster film.  For the most part, we're a bit more tamed. *wink wink*

I'll be honest, I have a fascination for the adult film industry. In a previous blog entry, I asked the question, "If art is created to show beauty and express a feeling, then wouldn't [shouldn't] pornography be considered art?"

The AVN will hold it's "Porn Oscars" ceremony on January 27, 2018. It's a huge event.

Like last year, I am planning on dragging my friends to the Hard Rock Cafe Hotel & Casino and watch the many beautiful women and men in the adult industry walk the red carpet.

It's probably the only time when our Vegas rules don't apply. Pictures will be taken. Click click. Snap snap.

Check out my pictures at the 2017 AVN Awards Red Carpet HERE.

Tracks 83: Music Mix 1984

Aside from being the year of George Orwell's totalitarian novel 1984, the world saw a lot of major political unrest. There were, however, many memorable moments such as the Summer Olympics and a plethora of awesome music videos.

When I was a kid, Michael Jackson was a god. We all emulated him, especially when it came to imitating his iconic moonwalk. So, to many of us kids, the 14-minute horror themed music video, Thriller, was well... thrilling.

The Cars - Magic
John Mellencamp - Pink Houses
John Lennon - Nobody Told Me
Michael Jackson - Thriller
Wang Chung - Dance Hall Days
Bananarama - Cruel Summer
Madonna - Lucky Star
Huey Lewis and The News - I Want A New Drug
Billy Ocean - Caribbean Queen
Scandal, Patty Smyth - The Warrior
Chicago - Hard Habit to Break
Night Ranger - Sister Christian
Thompson Twins - Hold Me Now
Prince - Let's Go Crazy
Laura Branigan - Self Control
The Romantics - Talking in Your Sleep
Cyndi Lauper - Time After Time
Bruce Springsteen - Dancing In The Dark
Lionel Richie - All Night Long
Van Halen - Jump

Stone Temple Pilots - Plush

Music Appreciation

This is one of my favorite songs of the 90's:

Plush, by the Stone Temple Pilots (STP), was released on October 13, 1993. The alternative rock song reached the album charts during the height of the alternative rock/grunge era and peaked the Album Rock Tracks.

The music video, which was directed by Josh Taft, received the MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist in 1994. The music video shows a video interpretation of the song's lyrics as well as Scott Weiland signing with the band in a lounge.

Eminem's Freestyle Rap "The Storm"

via BETNetworks

Intro

This is the calm before the storm right here.
Wait, how was I gonna start this off? I forgot. ...
Oh yeah.

Verse

That's an awfully hot coffee pot,
Should I drop it on Donald Trump? Prob'ly not,
But that's all I got 'til I come up with a solid plot.
Got a plan and now I gotta hatch it,
Like a damn Apache with a tomahawk,
I'm a walk inside a mosque on Ramadan,
And say a prayer that every time Melania talks,
She gets a mou— ah, I'm a stop.
But we better give Obama props,
'Cause what we got in office now's a kamikaze,
That'll prob'ly cause a nuclear holocaust,
And while the drama pops,
And he waits for shit to quiet down, he'll just gas his plane up
And fly around 'til the bombing stops.
Intensities heightened, tensions are risin',
Trump, when it comes to givin' a shit, you're stingy as I am,
Except when it comes to having the balls to go against me, you hide 'em,
'Cause you don't got the fucking nuts, like an empty asylum,
Racism's the only thing he's fantastic for,
'Cause that's how he gets his fucking rocks off and he's orange,
Yeah, sick tan,
That's why he wants us to disband,
'Cause he can not withstand,
The fact we're not afraid of Trump,
Fuck walkin' on egg shells, I came to stomp,
That's why he keeps screamin', "Drain the swamp!",
'Cause he's in quicksand.
It's like we take a step forwards, then backwards,
But this is his form of distraction,
Plus, he gets an enormous reaction,
When he attacks the NFL, so we focus on that,
Instead of talking Puerto Rico or gun reform for Nevada,
All these horrible tragedies and he's bored and would rather,
Cause a Twitter storm with the Packers.
Then says he wants to lower our taxes,
Then who's gonna pay for his extravagant trips,
Back and forth with his fam to his golf resorts and his mansions?
Same shit that he tormented Hillary for and he slandered,
Then does it more,
From his endorsement of Bannon,
Support for the Klansmen,
Tiki torches in hand for the soldier that's black,
And comes home from Iraq,
And is still told to go back to Africa,
Fork and a dagger in this racist 94-year-old grandpa,
Who keeps ignoring our past historical, deplorable factors,
Now if you're a black athlete, you're a spoiled little brat for,
Trying to use your platform or your stature,
To try to give those a voice who don't have one,
He says, "You're spittin' in the face of vets who fought for us you bastards,"
Unless you're a POW who's tortured and battered,
'Cause to him, you're zeros,
'Cause he don't like his war heroes captured.
That's not disrespecting the military.
Fuck that! This is for Colin, ball up a fist,
And keep that shit balled like Donald the bitch,
"He's gonna get rid of all immigrants!"
"He's gonna build that thing up taller than this!"
Well, if he does build it, I hope it's rock solid with bricks,
'Cause like him in politics, I'm using all of his tricks,
'Cause I'm throwin' that piece of shit against the wall 'til it sticks,
And any fan of mine who's a supporter of his,
I'm drawing in the sand a line, you're either for or against,
And if you can't decide who you like more and you're split,
On who you should stand beside, I'll do it for you with this: Fuck you.

End

The rest of America stand up,
We love our military, and we love our country,
But we fucking hate Trump.

(End lyrics)

Tracks 83: Music Mix 1983 Part 2

In 1983, as a seven year old, I grew up in a lower middle class neighborhood in a three bedroom two bathroom house.

My dad had a full size billiards table in the garage. The TV, which was a large piece of electronic furniture sat on the floor. Next to the TV monument stood my dad's entertainment center, where my dad would play his favorites: Pink Floyd and Eagles. My mom and I preferred the pop tunes like Journey, Hall and Oates, and Michael Jackson.

Journey - Separate Ways
Phil Collins - You Can't Hurry Love
Toni Basil - Mickey
Men Without Hats - The Safety Dance
Culture Club - Time
The Human League - Fascination
Marvin Gaye - Sexual Healing
Taco - Puttin' on the Ritz
After the Fire - Der Kommissar
The Pretenders - Back On The Chain Gang
Prince - Little Red Corvette
David Bowie - Let's Dance
Duran Duran - Hungry Like The Wolf
Dexys Midnight Runners - Come on Eileen
Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams
Flashdance - Maniac
Daryl Hall & John Oates - Maneater

Persis Khambatta

Acting Appreciation

If you are a Star Trek geek like myself, you'd probably recognize Lieutenant Ilia, the Deltan Starfleet officer, as Indian model/actress Persis Khambatta.

Persis was born in Mumbai, India on October 2, 1948. In 1965, she won the Femina Miss India contest, and she also participated in the Miss Universe pageant.

At the age of 19, she made her Bollywood debut in In the Arms of the Bombay Night. In 1979, she appeared in Star Trek: The Motion Picture as Lieutenant Ilia. Other movies followed such as Nighthawks, Megaforce, Warriors of the Lost World, My Beautiful Laudrette, Phoenix the Warrior.  She also appeared in TV series such as Macgyver and Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.

Persis died of a heart attack on August 18, 1998. She was 49 years old.

One cool factoid is that Persis Khambatta was the first Indian citizen to present at the Academy Awards in 1980.
