Fountains of Wayne - Stacy's Mom

Music Appreciation

First of all, supermodel Rachel Hunter looks amazing in Fountains of Wayne's 2003 music video Stacy's Mom. At 34, she showed the world that soccer moms can indeed be HOT.

But this entry isn't about Rachel Hunter. It's about the American rock band, Fountains of Wayne.

Fountains of Wayne, which consist of Chris Collingwood, Adam Schlesinger, Jody Porter, and Brian Young, formed in New York City in 1996. Their song, Stacy's Mom, was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Vocal Pop Performance in 2004, and ranked No. 88 on VH1's 100 Greatest Songs of the '00s.

The music video, which features the amazing Rachel Hunter in a bikini, was directed by Chris Applebaum.

"That Looks Like A Bad Dude Too."

Our nation does have a race relations problem. It's more so evident with the recent killing of Terence Crutcher, an unarmed black man, by Tulsa Police Officer Betty Shelby.

Although she was charged with felony manslaughter in the first degree on Thursday, September 22, 2016, this doesn't resolve the issue before the nation. It just temporarily cures the ailment on its surface but ignores the underlying cancerous disease.

Trevor Noah said it best on The Daily Show, "you can't tell anything about this man from up in the helicopter except for one thing, he's black." That's all we need to know--from high above he is black and "that looks like a bad dude too," right?

When Officer Shelby's attorney was asked if Crutcher's black race had anything to do with the officer's perceived danger, he responded, "No, him being a large man..." So, it wasn't him being black that made her feel in danger? It was him being large? A large man that happened to be black?

I don't know the solution to resolve the race issue. I'm not sure if there really is something viable and solid, but we as a nation need to bring it out in the open and talk about it.

Perhaps what hinders the discussion is that we have a group of people who promote hate just to antagonize a population. Probably the first step is to have our leaders stand and voice their objection to such movement.

Molly Crabapple

Art Appreciation

I came across a Smithsonian Magazine article about a fascinating person, Molly Crabapple, who is an American artist, activist, illustrated journalist, and entrepreneur.

As the article explained, she has reported on Syrian refugees and prisoners in Guantánamo Bay. She chronicled Occupy and even participated in the strike.

This influential artist first started as a model and burlesque performer. She also modeled for SuicideGirls, which I do remember seeing her portfolio.

In late 2015, Crabapple released her memoir titled Drawing Blood. Sarah Galo for Bustle reported on the artist's new book and and an interview with Vice touches on being an artist.

You can see more of her work HERE.
