Photography Appreciation

Taikichi Irie was a well known Japanese photographer. Born on November 5, 1905, Irie started photography in his teens and held his first solo exhibition of bunraku puppets.

Matt Zoll

Art Appreciation

If you follow my blog, you'd know by now that I have an appreciation for realism. Whenever a realistic painting captures my attention, I usually have to find out more about the artist, such as this artist:

American artist Matt Zoll is known for his still-life realism. He is utilizes Flemish master's techniques by mixing powder pigments and black oil to create vibrant colors in his paintings.

Jeff Cowen

Photography Appreciation

I came across a picture of a young girl looking serious and away from the lens. The print looked old. I thought perhaps it was taken in the 20s or 30s, but in reality it was a creation made by American art photographer Jeff Cowen.

Jeff Cowen is recognized for using the darkroom to paint during development. He is also recognized for the condition of the paper he prints on; at times, the paper is either ripped, burned, or placed over each other to create a collage.

He did an interview a few years ago that explains his art and development process with art historian Jennifer Crowley and LensCulture Magazine Editor and Publisher Jim Casper, which can be viewed HERE. You can also see more of his work HERE.

David Bailey

David Bailey is a well-known English fashion and portrait photographer recognized for his contribution and role in helping create the "Swinging London" in the 1960s.

Born on January 2, 1938 in East London, Bailey grew up during the Second World War. At the age of 15, he dropped out of school to become a newspaper copy boy. After serving in the Royal Air Force in Singapore, he pursued a career in photography.

In 1960, he was contracted as a fashion photographer for British Vogue magazine, and later captured iconic images of pop star celebrities such as The Beatles, Mick Jagger, Jean Shrimpton, and Andy Warhol.

The Guardian has a great interview that reveals Bailey's influences and fears. He even stated in the interview that "political correctness is a form of mind control." You can read the complete Q and A HERE.

Herman Tulp

Art Appreciation

I appreciate the female figure, and I definitely appreciate an artist who can present their beauty on canvas. Dutch painter Herman Tulp is perhaps one of my favorite modern hyper-realistic painters. He is known for his paintings of females in intimate settings and dreamy spaces.

Carl Larsson

It's almost Christmas day, and I was surfing the net for artists or photographers who were primarily known for Christmas themes.

I came across Swedish painter Carl Larsson. He grew up in extreme poverty, attended the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts at the age of thirteen, and became a graphic artist for newspapers, magazines and books before moving to Paris at the age of 24. He then met his wife, Karin Bergöö, another artist, at a Scandinavian artists' colony outside Paris who had an influence in his work.

His wife and children became his models, and he is more recognized for his paintings of his family during Christmas.
