4 Non Blondes - What's Up

Music Appreciation

Remember the time of flannel and Doc Martens or when wearing combat boots and motorcycle goggles wrapped around a Mad Hatter top hat was cool?

It was the height of the grunge era, when California rock band 4 Non Blondes' What's Up hit the charts in 1993 and reached No. 14 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. The song would become the band's only hit, after the group disbanded. Lead singer Linda Perry pursued a solo career and was later inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2015.

The music video, which was directed by Morgan Lawley, features the band members (Christa Hillhouse, Roger Rocha, Dawn Richardson, and Linda Perry) performing in a living-room setting with snippets of the them in the playground, streets, and performing.

Robert Fuchs

Music Appreciation

Austrian composer Robert Fuchs was born on February 15, 1847 in Frauental an der Laßnitz in Southern Austria. He was a professor of music theory at the Vienna Conservatory and was highly regarded, although he did little to promote his compositions.

Johannes Brahms once wrote, "Fuchs is a splendid musician, everything is so fine and so skillful, so charmingly invented, that one is always pleased."

Conducted by Christian Ludwig, Cologne Chamber Orchestra
