Jorge Santos
Art Appreciation
About 10 years ago, I came across artwork by the self-taught artist, Jorge Santos, in an art publication and blogged about it HERE.
Santos has a pretty interesting past that has influenced his artwork. He was born in Angola, southwestern coast of Africa, in 1959. Because of violent political turmoil, the Santos family fled to Portugal, which was also facing a revolution. In 1982, Santos felt he didn't belong in Portugal, and decided to move to the United States.
It's said that his sense of displacement, not truly belong to a country, has added perspective to his artwork. It seems as if the subject is floating over the background.
His subjects are not like those one would find in a realism or hyperrealism piece. Instead, his characters seem to be more alienated, odd, socially awkward and disconnected in an illusory dreamlike environment.
