Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico by Ansel Adams

Photography Appreciation

Ansel Adams, a renowned American landscape photographer, captured the iconic black and white photograph titled "Moonrise." The image elegantly displays the moon rising over Hernandez, New Mexico, situated to the north of Santa Fe. Adams was commissioned by the Secretary of the Interior to photograph scenes for large mural prints destined to adorn the Interior Museum.

The photograph's significance lies in its precise dating, a detail unveiled through astronomical insights. Two astronomers meticulously examined astronomical data to determine the exact moment when the photograph was taken. After thorough calculations, Dennis di Cicco established that the image was captured at precisely 4:49:20 p.m. on November 1, 1941.
