Leon Kroll

Art Appreciation

American painter and lithographer Leon Kroll was once described by LIFE Magazine as "the dean of U.S. nude painters."

The painting that caught my attention was one titled Reflections, which I came across while browsing a blog I follow, La Conchiglia di Venere. The artwork shows a naked petite girl fixing her reddish hair in front of a mirror. Her back is delicately curved from the weight placed on her knee resting on the chaise lounge.

Jeff Wack

Art Appreciation

I came across Jeff Wack's work through one of the blogs I follow, American Gallery, and to be honest, I was very intrigued. I fell in love with almost every one of his images.

The international acclaimed Southern Californian illustrator is known for blending digital photography and digital painting of the female form. Many of his artwork pays homage to previous master artists such as Gustav Klimt, Frida Kahlo, and Sandro Botticelli.

Hungarian photographer Ildiko Neer is known for her majestic landscape photography. I came across her photos on Tutt' Art, a blog I follow, and I had to add it to my collection of photographers and their works.

Jim Vogel

Art Appreciation

The past few times I've traveled to New Mexico, I bring back The Essential Guide Santa Fe & Taos, which highlights local artists. One of the artists that I have been wanting to blog about is Jim Vogel.

Vogel is originally from Roswell, New Mexico and known for his regionalism paintings of rural New Mexico life. His art resembles that of Thomas Hart Benton.

Better known for his contributions to music, Ed Freeman is a featured photographer in several publications and widely exhibited in galleries and museums.

Arthur Rothstein

My undergraduate studies included many photojournalism classes. In fact, I thought photojournalism would be my career.

During my studies, I learned about the great photojournalists who captured events and life during wars and the Great Depression. One such photojournalist was Arthur Rothstein.

Rothstein is considered America's premier photojournalist. He is most recognized for chronicling life of the rural poor during the Great Depression. Many of his photographs are used when teaching about that era.

Perhaps one of the most captivating photographs he took is of a girl looking out the window. Striking is the juxtaposition of the framed black girl and the framed advertisement of a white woman on the newspaper.
