Marian McPartland

Music Appreciation

Born on March 20, 1918, Margaret Marian McPartland was an English-American jazz pianist, composer and writer. At an early age, Marian learned how to play the piano by ear. In 1935, she was then accepted to the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. She became a concert pianist and then developed an appreciation for American jazz music.

During World War II, Marian joined the United Services Organization (USO), where she then met Jimmy McPartland at a jam session in Belgium. After the war, Jimmy and Marian moved to Chicago, then Manhattan.

In the early 1950s, Marian started her trio and then McPartland, Crow, and Morello. In 1958, she was among a group picture of 57 notable jazz musicians.

She then began reviewing jazz and blues albums for Down Beat magazine, in the late 1960s. She was then the host of the Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz on National Public Radio from 1978 to 2011.

Marian has received many recognition and awards such as the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master in 2000, the Grammy Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2004, and inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame in 2007.

She passed away on August 20, 2013.

Linnea Tobias

Art Appreciation

While surfing one of my favorite art blogs, Art Odyssey, I came across a painting of an Eastern bluebird standing on a abstract circular pattern branch with two large flower bursts of magenta and orange in the background. The painting titled, "Eastern Bird #3" is by Washington artist Linnea Tobias.

Tobias is known for her incorporating textile design and patterns with her watercolor and acrylic paintings of birds, trees, and plants.

You can see more of her work HERE.

Pattie Boyd

Fashion Model Appreciation

Pattie Boyd is probably best known as an English fashion model.

Born on March 17, 1944, Boyd started her modeling career in 1962, soon after moving to London. She was cast for a role in the Beatles' 1964 film, A Hard Day's Night, where she met George Harrison. About two years later, they were married.

Due to infidelity, alcohol and drugs, their marriage failed, and they divorced in 1977. Boyd then married Eric Clapton in 1979.

Pattie Boyd is also a photographer. She has exhibited a collection of photographs of Harrison and Clapton, titled Through the Eye of a Muse, internationally. You can see her photographs HERE.

Born in Kent, England on March 16, 1799, Anna Atkins, an English botanist, is considered the first person to publish a book illustrated with photographic images. By many, she is considered the first woman to create a photograph.

She learned the "photographic drawing" or calotype technique from photography pioneer William Henry Fox Talbot, a family friend.
