Persis Khambatta

Acting Appreciation

If you are a Star Trek geek like myself, you'd probably recognize Lieutenant Ilia, the Deltan Starfleet officer, as Indian model/actress Persis Khambatta.

Persis was born in Mumbai, India on October 2, 1948. In 1965, she won the Femina Miss India contest, and she also participated in the Miss Universe pageant.

At the age of 19, she made her Bollywood debut in In the Arms of the Bombay Night. In 1979, she appeared in Star Trek: The Motion Picture as Lieutenant Ilia. Other movies followed such as Nighthawks, Megaforce, Warriors of the Lost World, My Beautiful Laudrette, Phoenix the Warrior.  She also appeared in TV series such as Macgyver and Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.

Persis died of a heart attack on August 18, 1998. She was 49 years old.

One cool factoid is that Persis Khambatta was the first Indian citizen to present at the Academy Awards in 1980.

Elon Musk's Vision of Becoming a Multi-Planetary Species

Elon Musk introduced the BFR, a spacecraft that can be used for intercontinental and interplanetary transportation. His vision sees this rocket capable of not only flying people across the earth in less than an hour, but also transporting people to the red planet, Mars.

Tracks 83: Music Mix 1983

When I was little, before we had MTV, I looked forward to the weekends and staying up late to watch Night Tracks on TBS. For me, Night Tracks became the looking glass to a totally different world.

Being from deep south Texas, a Catholic conservative and predominantly Mexican-American area, watching Boy George (Culture Club) was something very new, but my parents never censored my viewing habits--although, my mom still changes the channel when there is a sex scene on TV.

I was seven years old when I was exposed to the amazing world of music videos. Videos gave life to the music on the radio. And as a very imaginative kid, it allowed me to mimic performances and dances, especially Michael Jackson's Billie Jean and Jennifer Beals' Flashdance dance moves.

Daryl Hall & John Oates - Family Man
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - You Got Lucky
Spandau Ballet - True
Stray Cats - (She's) Sexy & 17
Joe Jackson - Steppin' Out
Culture Club - I'll Tumble 4 Ya
Loverboy - Hot Girls In Love
Elton John - I'm Still Standing
Naked Eyes - Promises Promises
Kinks - Come Dancing
The Tubes - She's A Beauty
Laura Branigan - Gloria
Men At Work - Overkill
Madness - Our House
The Clash - Rock the Casbah
Adam Ant - Goody Two Shoes
Naked Eyes - Always Something There to Remind Me
