Photography Appreciation

Reid Blackburn was a photojournalist with the The Columbian newspaper who was killed during the May 18, 1980 volcanic eruption of Mount St. Helens.

Blackburn was born on August 11, 1952. He attended McMinnville's Linfield College, and began working with the Vancouver newspaper in 1975. He was a mountaineer who was known to enjoy hiking Mount St. Helens.

Because of his knowledge of the mountain and his outdoor skills, Blackburn was assigned to cover the volcanic event for The Columbian, National Geographic, and the U.S. Geological Survey.
