Bell Biv DeVoe - Poison

Music Appreciation (A Retrospect)

To be honest, I was going to blog about BBD's "Do Me," but I remembered my mother-in-law reads my entries.

Bell Biv DeVoe. They were the kids from New Edition--a teen R&B group that climbed the charts in the early 80's with Candy Girl and Cool it Now.

After Bobby Brown's departure from New Edition, the remaining group members (Michael Bivins, Ricky Bell, Ronnie DeVoe, Ralph Tresvant, and Johnny Gill) began new projects and solo careers.

Michael Bivins, Ricky Bell, and Ronnie DeVoe formed Bell Biv Devoe and introduced their sound with their first album, Poison. Their title track, Poison, hit number one in the Billboard's R&B/HipHop chart.

They probably didn't introduce hip hop urban wear, but they sure did make it cool. I recall asking my mom to buy me timberland boots to go with my over sized hooded long sleeve shirt. Although I digged Bivins I found myself dressing like Bell. Of course, I was short and stumpy when I was young and couldn't get away with emulating Bivins or DeVoe.

As a freshman in high school, what did this song mean to me? The only think I could think of is "Never trust a big butt and a smile." Yes, embarrassingly enough, I actually wrote that on someone's yearbook. If anyone finds it, it's gonna be both a whole lot of money one day (wink).

Top 10 romantic songs

I'll be honest, I try to upload songs that pertain to the various seasons or holidays.  Valentines is just a round the corner and I thought I would update my list to go with the season.

After reviewing other "top 10" lists, I came up with a comparison list of popular romantic songs:

10. Savage Garden - Truly Madly Deeply

9. Roberta Flack - The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face

8. Aerosmith - Don't Want to Miss A Thing

7. Bryan Adams - Everything I Do (I Do it For You)

6. Frankie Valle & The Four Seasons - Can't Take My Eyes Off You

5. Whitney Houston - I Will Always Love You

4. Eric Clapton - Wonderful Tonight

3. Etta James - At Last

2. The Righteous Brothers - Unchained Melody

1. Celine Dion - My Heart Will Go On

And I thought I would add one that my wife thinks should have been listed as one of the top 10 romantic songs:

The Pretenders - I'll Stand by You

10,000 Maniacs - Because the Night

Music Appreciation (A Retrospect)

In 1993, Natalie Merchant and 10,000 Maniacs recorded a live performance on MTV Unplugged. I was about 17 years old working at U.S. Shoes in McAllen's SteinMart at that time.

I recall first listening to this album at a girl's place.  She was a Maniac's fan, and she made me one too.  She also introduced me to cigarettes and liquor, but that's a whole other story.

Born in Jamestown, NY, Natalie Merchant joined the 10,000 Maniacs in 1981 and left to explore her solo career in 1993--soon after her performance on MTV Unplugged.

New Order - Blue Monday

Music Appreciation

Something is wrong with my TV?  I see a CNN playing on my MTV!!!  Oh wait.  It's New Order's Blue Monday

Originally released in the UK in 1983, the song became widely accepted in dance clubs. Several others have tried to replicate or improve the song, but to my own personal opinion have failed to do so; although, Orgy did come close.

So when did I first hear this song?  It was the sitter who also introduced me to Hitchcock, Van Halen, and Sixteen Candles

The Linden Murders

Linden, New York is found a drive up from the Old Genesee County Poorhouse, which is a few minutes south of the City of Batavia.  From the poorhouse, Linden Road leads to a community surrounded by trees and along the Little Tonawanda Creek.

The community has an interesting history.  Ninety years ago, a handful of murders happened in this little community.  An unidentified lady was found dead in the woods, another lady was found murdered in her basement, and three were found burned dead.

No one was arrested for the murders.  The cases were unsolved.

Below are some pictures I took when visiting Linden, New York, this past winter.

Gordon Parks: "American Gothic, Washington, D.C."

Photography Appreciation
Gordon Parks, renowned photographer and film maker, took this photo of Ms. Ella Watson while working at the Farm Security Administration in Washington, DC.  The young African American photographer became a fashion photographer for Vogue and Life magazines.  Some of his subjects included Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali.  He later went into film and directed Shaft, starring Richard Roundtree.
